Animal Facts: Horses

  • Live up to 25-30 Years
  • The longest living horse lived to be 62 and the oldest living pony lived to be 56.
  • Consist of 3 categories:
    • “Hot bloods” for speed and endurance (think horse racing)
    • “Cold bloods” such as draft horses (and some ponies) for slow heavy work (think heavy pulling events)
    • “Warm bloods” developed to focus on a combination of Hot and Cold bloods for specific duties. (think long distance jumping events)
  • Horses are flight-or-flight animals. Their first reaction to a scary situation is to run away, if that is not an option then they will fight.
  • There are more than 300 different breeds of horses; Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, Saddlebred, Paint, Arabian, Clydesdale, etc…
  • Horses suck up their water like we use straws.
  • They graze continually throughout the day never taking in a huge meal.
  • Horses do not have the ability to throw up, like humans do, so digestive problems can cause major issues.
  • Horses have the largest eyes of any land animal.
  • Gestation length is 11 months, so yep, they are pregnant for 11 months. Not very much longer than us humans.
  • Stage one of labor can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours and horses can control this stage.
  • Once the water breaks the foal is born in less than 15 minutes.
  • Horses have Binocular vision meaning they can see two different things in both of their eyes at the same time.  They also have blind spots right in front of their head and right behind their butt.
